Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS)
An auto components manufacturer was looking to create an automated material handling system for optimal use of space and drive operational efficiency. The legacy operation involved:
- Picking and placing components in designated storage areas
- Mapping out the storage system that consisted of multiple rows and columns over multiple floors
Implementation
- Developed HMI/SCADA screens to display vacant and occupied slots
- Used S7 300 CPU and drivers to control Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs) for finding exact vacant locations and managing retrieval from specific locations
- Designed a communication system between AGVs and control system through WLAN system
Outcome
- Higher ROI on plant through optimum usage of space
- Enhanced efficiency through time and cost management
- Eliminated dust and noise pollution caused by cranes used for pick and place operations
